Risk is the combination of the likelihood of an event and the severity of the potential consequences. In the context of trees, risk combines the likelihood of conflict or tree failure occurring and affecting a target with the severity of the associated consequences – personal injury, property damage, or disruption of activities. 

An arborist evaluates designated areas either from vehicles or from walking down paths, streets, or sidewalks to identify high and extreme risk trees. These assessments are intended to cover large areas very quickly with small amounts of details being recorded for each tree. Level 1 assessments can also be used to identify areas or certain trees that may need Level 2 or Level 3 assessments to be conducted.

An arborist walks completely around the tree and looks for defects in all visible areas of the tree. These include the use of a rubber mallet, probes and visual aids to help determine if further investigation is necessary.

Included are assessments of the roots, trunk, and crown of the tree. These include aerial inspections and the use of a resistograph to determine the amount of decay in the tree. Recommendations for the tree will be made after the assessment and a report will be provided with recommendations. 

Cabling provides additional support for trees with structural problems or poor architecture. For example, a tree with a tight “V” attachment may have codominant stems, which are more vulnerable to failure during extreme weather conditions, such as wind or ice load. We offer two cabling options: Static or Dynamic, tailored to the unique needs of each tree.  

Static cables consist of a steel cable that is attached between two stems by drilling into each stem. These cables minimize the movement of the stems being supported and are used to provide support to very weak attachments or attachments that are already beginning to fail. 

Dynamic cable systems allow trees to continue their natural stretch and movement in the weather. Once the limbs that have been cabled for attempted support move more than about 1-2 feet apart, the Dynamic Cable provides a link between the 2 stems so that they begin to balance their weight against each other.

Each year, more than a million trees in the United States are struck by lightning. Lightning can destroy trees in a matter of seconds or severely weaken them and secondary pests would kill them down the road. Lightning protection systems are used to reduce the risk of damage to trees from lightning strikes. In addition, trees with trunks within 10 feet (3 m) of a structure, with branches that extend above the structure, should be considered for a lightning protection system because of the risk of side flash and fire. 

Our tree lighting protection systems are designed to provide a point for lightning’s current to travel safely to the ground. The installation of our lightning protection systems will reduce the likelihood of damage to the tree and nearby structures (that would have been damaged by falling limbs or the entire tree). Our expertly installed systems are very effective at preventing lightning damage to trees.
